Big Quake Hits China...Hundreds Dead, Thousands Injured

It seems to be about every day now....this time hundreds dead and thousands injured.

Now ask in church tomorrow who heard about the Chinese earthquake and you will find out that very few had any clue.

Why?

Because they are happening so frequently that, unless you have a biblical world view, folks have started to tune them out.  Even the media has started to tune them out.

Had this happened 20 years ago the scenes of devastation playing on NBC, CBS and ABC, along with the international outpouring of support, would have been intense.

QIONGLAI, China — The earthquake that shook Sichuan Province on Saturday struck at 8 a.m., when people were rising a little later than usual, and when schools and universities were closed.

“We were just getting up and getting dressed in our dormitory when the building shook and I looked outside from our seventh-floor window and saw a row of houses collapsed,” said Xu Yan, 22, a student at the Agricultural University in Ya’an, in a telephone interview. “I have never flown down the stairs so fast.”

China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs, which has a role in disaster relief, said on its Web site that as of 9 p.m. in Beijing, the known death toll from the earthquake in Sichuan Province was 157, with most of the dead in Ya’an. The ministry also said that about 5,700 people had been injured.

For residents of Lushan County, the epicenter of Saturday’s earthquake, the events evoked eerie memories of a devastating earthquake in May 2008 when more than 70,000 people were killed in Chengdu, about 70 miles east of Lushan.

Saturday’s quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7, according to the Chinese authorities. The United States Geological Survey said that the earthquake occurred on the Longmenshan fault line, the same one responsible for the 7.9 magnitude quake in 2008. But more than 12 hours after the initial temblor, the impact seemed to be far less severe.

Do you remember the quake of 2008 that killed 70,000 Chinese?  I vaguely remember something happening...but that is an ENORMOUS amount of people.

Can you understand why the rest of the world looks at America and says, "So what?  You had 20 kids die at a school..get over it!"  or, "So what?... you have a few people and dozens injured by a bomb at a parade...get over it!  Most of us around the world are wondering where our next meal is coming from and trying to find safe shelter...we don't have time to worry about a few Americans dying."
