City of 20 Million May Soon Be Out of Water

Brazil is suffering a horrible drought.  If relief doesn't come in the form of rain really soon...a city of 20 million people could be forced to have their water cut to 2 days per week.  Think about it....what if your toilet only flushed 2 days per week....or you could only shower 2 days per week.

If this happens, the entire country could become destabilized.

A last-ditch effort to avoid a complete collapse of one of the city's primary water sources, the city of Sao Paulo in Brazil, population 20 million, has proposed cutting off the water supply up to five days a week, allowing residents to access water only twice per week, or about eight times monthly.

As we reported back in December, Brazil's largest city is barely surviving the worst recorded drought to ever hit the region. With demand for water far exceeding supply, officials have been frantically working to develop a system that will preserve what little water remains while avoiding a complete breakdown of this large metropolitan region.

The "Sistema Cantareira," a series of five interconnected reservoirs that under normal conditions provides water for about 9 million of Sao Paulo's residents, is almost completely dry. According to the latest reports, the utility, which sits almost halfway between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, is down to a mere 5.1 percent of its total capacity of 264 billion gallons of water.

If nothing is done to conserve what little water remains, the entire system will more than likely be dry in a matter of months, and most likely weeks, leaving almost half of the city without water. Consequently, the government is proposing some drastic measures that it says are necessary to prevent a total collapse.

We have been wondering for years what may become of California as it continues to suffer through the worst drought in the state's history.

What would happen if we change the location of the above article to Los Angeles?

Think it could never happen??  Guess again....

All the usual measures are being taken to try to soften the impact of the drought: The Governor has declared a state of emergency, strict water conservation efforts are already in force, neighborhood "water cops" hand out stiff fines for excessive water usage, and people are scrambling to cut water consumption in every way possible.

These efforts, however, will not be enough. The simple, inescapable fact is that much of California is simply not sustainably inhabitable with the population densities it currently hosts. Los Angeles, in particular, is a city built in a desert and almost entirely dependent on imported water supplies for its survival.

California is a wonderful place full of amazing and fun people, but the "California lifestyle" pursued there flat-out isn't supportable by the climate of the region. For example, California currently hosts 1,140 golf courses. (3) Golf courses are perhaps the perfect symbol of the level of shameful denial under which so many of us Americans now live when it comes to sustainability.

Golf courses use ridiculously excessive volumes of water to create an artificial "green" playing field in the middle of dry, arid regions. While golf is a wonderful sport and a healthy way for many people to enjoy some sunshine and fresh air, the presence of massive green lawns in the middle of near-desert regions should cause any thinking person to ask, "What's wrong with this picture?"

Hey God!  We don't need you telling us we can't live in the desert!  We are Americans!!  We can live any dang place we want!!  We are masters of our own domain!  We will dam the rivers and created cities with swimming pools in every back yard....and canals running all across the desert!  Who needs rain?!  Who need you??

Certainly we are attempting to build our own Tower of Babel.  Our modern building methods will make us be like God!

Pride comes before the fall.

Just imagine if California runs out of water.  We get most of our food from there.  Imagine the real estate collapse that would happen if the richest state in the union can't even give their water-less homes away.

Sounds like we have built a mess for ourselves...
