Minneapolis Bans Discrimination Based on Height and Weight

Let’s say you’re a 400 lb lady who can’t really bathe or toilet herself correctly and would NOT be a pleasant woman to have around your clothing store in Minneapolis.  You better hire her and reinforce your handicap ramp cuz if you don’t you may find yourself in front of a transgender judge and an overweight-lesbian prosecuting attorney and they will hang you up to dry.

No wonder business is leaving Minnesota heading for South Dakota and other places that don’t sit around figuring out how to write another 200 pages of nonsense that make it hard to be an employer.

Minneapolis City Council has voted unanimously to expand the city’s civil rights protections, which will include a ban on discrimination based on a person's height and weight.

This week, the council voted 13-0 to establish three new protected classes under city law: people with criminal backgrounds, housing status, and height and weight.

The ordinance, which is supported by Mayor Jacob Frey, would outlaw discrimination in employment and housing based on these statuses. If signed, the ordinance would go into effect on Aug. 1.

Cities including New York and San Francisco have also made the move to ban discrimination based on body size, while the first such ban was passed by Atlanta in 2022.

"We have seen discrimination against our neighbors based on their unhoused status, impact by the criminal justice system, or the size of their body. The work that led to this ordinance, which has long been led by the community, will make a tangible, positive difference in the lives of our residents," Ward 9 Council Member Jason Chavez, lead author of the ordinance, said in a statement.

The ordinance was co-authored by Ward 2 Council Member Robin Wonsley.

The ordinance also expands the city’s definition of race to include skin color, certain physical features, and hair texture and style.

The definition of familial status would be expanded to include those residing with and caring for adults who are unable to care for themselves.
