The Big Tune Out
The world is on a precipice. The Middle East is close to war, federal deficits are at an unsustainable level, Europe is set to collapse, unemployment is at record highs, global unrest seems to be spreading.....holy cats!, with all that news one would think Americans would be intensely involved in choosing our next leader. Someone who can lead us away from the abyss to which we are heading!!!
But of course, you would be wrong. Americans are not only tuning out the Republican race...but they are also tuning out President Obama and Congress. They simply don't care who leads them or what their leaders or future leaders are saying or doing in these tumultuous times.
But you know what they do care about and what they ARE tuning into?.....NFL FOOTBALL!!!!
But it's not confined to the Republican side. Look at President Obama's State of the Union numbers. That speech famously blankets all television and radio networks. His first speech to a joint session of Congress, in February 2009, drew 52 million viewers. A year later the State of the Union had an understandable fall-off to about 48 million. In 2011, another fall: 43 million watched. A few weeks ago his 2012 State of the Union drew just 38 million. From 52 to 38: That's quite a decline. And again, during an continuing crisis and in a presidential election year. As for the president's interviews and other speeches, well, when was the last time you heard someone ask excitedly, "Did you hear what Obama said?"
Whose numbers are up? The NFL's.
Maybe the story the political class is missing is not "They don't like the Republican field," or "They don't like Obama." Maybe the story is that people are tuning out altogether. Maybe they're bored with politics, and most especially with politicians. Maybe they don't think our government can't solve anything. Maybe, even, our political class has done such a good job depicting the crisis we're in that the American people, with their low faith in institutions, think nothing, really, can be done about it. So let's check out. Let's watch the game.

Now lets attempt to plug in our entertainment driven society into the Cycle of Nations to see where we are;
From Bondage to Spiritual faith
From Spiritual faith to great courage
From courage to liberty
From liberty to abundance
From abundance to selfishness
From selfishness to complacency
From complacency to apathy
From apathy to dependency
From dependency BACK to bondage again.
And so ends the cycle...only to be repeated again. For those who read the Bible see how many times the Israelites completed this cycle.
Now where do you think America is? Of course if we are tuning out the election of the man who could affect our entire lives as Leader of the Free World, then clearly we are in the apathy stage and also WELL INTO the dependency stage because we now have over 45,000,000 on food stamps, millions dependent on Social Security for their income and government Medicaid for health care....not to mention Section 8 housing and welfare.
Sounds like our next stop is back to bondage.
How, who, when and where are yet to be determined.
Even so....come Lord Jesus.
